How to Teach Youth Pitching

Teaching youth pitching is different than teaching advanced pitching. Advanced pitchers understand the major concepts of pitching already and so they can comprehend more information faster.

Young pitchers usually don't understand exactly what it is they are doing, nor they do they realize the importance of certain aspects of their pitching mechanics. For this reason, you need to keep the pitching lingo very simple and straight forward when teaching youth pitching.

The best way to teach a youth pitcher a certain part of their mechanics, try to use easy to remember key words that they will be able to relate to. For example, instead of trying to explain how to tuck the glove under the armpit during the finish, try to use the analogy of a chicken wing. Many young pitchers will understand a chicken wing rather than a drawn out explanation of what to do.

Be visual. Youth pitchers can learn by example. If you are trying to explain a concept and they don't understand, make them watch you do it. Show them what they are doing incorrectly, and then show them how it should be done. Being visual with young pitchers is a great way to show them a concept without having to explain it.

Repetition is the key to making a youth pitcher remember what you have taught them. Most young players won't remember every thing that you teach them, so be sure to repeat with them what you have taught them in the past. This repetition will help them remember everything you have taught them.
